Prerequisites: Admission to Addiction Counseling program at BA or MA level or instructor permission
This course explores major theoretical and practical approaches to substance abuse counseling, including current information on the role of neuroscience. Topics will focus on therapeutic techniques, such as individual, group, and family counseling, motivational interviewing, and counseling with minors. Practical issues related to case management and record-keeping will be practiced. Treatment of behavioral addiction such as gambling and gaming, will also be addressed, as well as means with which to appropriately integrate Navajo traditional or other spiritual/cultural practices. Students taking the course at the graduate level will explore these processes at their selected sites and produce a final project related to their findings. Offered: Spring Semester.
